Can't Get To The Gym - Wii Is Your Perfect Alternative

Now I know to some the title may be a bit confusing. First, I'm sure you think I've lost my mind with that terrible spelling and subject-verb disagreement. No my friends, your eyes do not deceive you. Wii is your perfect alternative for those couch potatoes who just can't seem to get motivated and get out of the house to their local gym.
The cool thing about the Wii is the fact that it's interactive and boy do I mean "active". You simply plug it up to the television just as you would any other game console. Then you place this little box that detects your motion on top of the television. This allows you (with the use of a hand held remote) to simulate the movements of the game characters or their opponents on screen.
You can play golf, tennis, baseball, football or even go a couple of rounds with some pretty mean heavyweights in the boxing ring.
After purchasing one for my oldest son's birthday, we set it up and watched our two sons go to work.
It looked like such fun, my husband and I decided to try it out.
I played tennis and he lived out his dream of becoming Sugar Ray Leonard!
We were both sweating profusely and out of breath in no time. It still never dawned on us that we were actually getting a workout.
The mind has a funny way of doing that to you. When something is fun and seemingly effortless it isn't viewed as work. How could something that was so much fun be as grueling as a day at the gym?
It wasn't until I read an article recently that stated playing some of the games available with the Wii burn just as many calories as actually participating in the sport or activity in real life.
Lately, there have been so many iniatives targeted at getting kids out of the house and outside to play until the Wii is a welcomed addition for parents who can't seem to tear their kids away from the television without the aid of a friendly wrecking ball.
The game has been such a hit as far as fitness is concerned that Nintendo has recently developed games specifically with fitness in mind. Wii Fit gets everyone pumped up about making enjoyable physical activities a part of their daily routines. Wii Fit even tracks users' progress, which lets people see how they have improved while challenging them to better their scores and stay motivated to keep going.
If you haven't tried it, what are you waiting for. Wii is where it's at!
