My Thoughts on 9/11/01

My youngest child is 8 years old. He was born 2001 just 5 months before that terrible day in September. I will always know exactly how many years it's been because of that fact.

Time is so relative. It just doesn't seem like eight years have passed since that horrible day. My heart ached for so long. I was glued to the TV and spent countless hours asking myself how mankind could do such heinous things to one another especially in the name of or for the sake of religion - whatever belief it may be.

I can still see the empty grieving faces of family members and friends walking trance-like around the streets of New York near Ground Zero holding pictures of their loved ones - praying, wishing, hoping desperately for some sort of miracle that would reunite them - a miracle that never came.

I remember the voice mail messages the media aired. Wives telling their husbands they were afraid and confused as to what was going on. Husbands telling their wives how much they loved them and not to worry they would be home as soon as everything was sorted out - only they never made it home.

I managed to get a glimpse of Ground Zero while vacationing in New York City a couple of years ago.

The bus was full of excited New York tourists. People from all corners of the world. Many different races, ethnic backgrounds, ages.  We all fell silent as the bus approached this hallowed ground. Thoughts of the thousands of lives lost there flickered through my mind.

Our country has been embroiled in a seemingly unending "war on terror" every since. My greatest fear is that the lives lost on that day and the lives of our men and women in uniform that have been lost since may all have been in vain.

Are we any safer? Can we ever put an end to an ideology so deeply ingrained in the mind of a "terrorist" - death for them is more glorious than life? How do you fight that type enemy?

Will we ever truly live in peace?

So so sad even after all this time.

hi roschelle

thi was beautifully written. the compassion and concern can be heard in your words. my son is in the air force, and my daughter is going into the army next month, and i am terrified, yet still hopeful and filled with Faith, but it's hard. so, you see, there are still ramifications of that day-both kids have to serve 4 tours of duty. my last article had some of the same points.

thank you for sharing this,

my best,
